Most of us have been there. A hard day, a stressful afternoon, a moment where you’re just… done. And before you’ve even made a conscious decision, you’re in the kitchen. Or at the pantry. Or somehow through a bag of chips you didn’t even really want.

And it helps! For like, two minutes. And then it doesn’t. And then the guilt kicks in and you feel WORSE than you did before you started eating, which, honestly? It is one of the worst parts.

For some women, that’s an occasional thing. For others, it’s every single day. A pattern. A loop that feels impossible to break.

If that loop sounds familiar, this episode is going to reframe everything you think you know about why it keeps happening. Because this isn’t a willpower problem. It isn’t a food problem. It’s something much more specific, and once you see it, you can actually start to work with it.

In This Episode, You’ll Learn:

  • Why you didn’t consciously choose to emotionally eat, and why understanding that removes a huge layer of shame
  • The trigger–behavior–relief loop that turns emotional eating from an occasional thing into something that feels completely automatic and out of your control
  • Why you’re not actually addicted to food (I know, I know, hear me out) and what you’re ACTUALLY addicted to instead
  • How this pattern likely started way before you were old enough to realize it was happening
  • Why emotional eating often has nothing to do with food and everything to do with what’s missing elsewhere in your life
  • What happens to your world when food takes on this role, and why it tends to get more intense over time, not less
  • Why the goal is NOT to control your eating better (seriously, stop trying that)
  • Two journal questions that can help you start seeing your own pattern more clearly, right now

What’s Actually Going On When You Eat Your Emotions

Okay so first, I want to say something that I really need you to hear.

No one decides to start emotionally eating. Like, nobody sat down one day and went, “you know what, I’m going to start using food to cope with every uncomfortable feeling I have.” That’s not how this works.

For a lot of us, this pattern started really young. Like, under-10 years old. Maybe you noticed early on that when you felt sad or bored or overwhelmed, eating something made you feel a little better. Or maybe the adults around you dealt with hard feelings by turning to food, and you just… learned that’s what you do. You absorbed it. Nobody had to explain it to you.

And here’s the thing. It WORKED. You felt something uncomfortable, you ate, and your internal state shifted. There was relief. Comfort. A moment of not-feeling-whatever-you-were-feeling.

So your nervous system went, “oh! we’re doing THAT. Got it.” And it started building a little reward circuit around it.

Trigger → Behavior → Relief → Repeat.

The more you repeated it, the more automatic it became. Until eventually, your subconscious, which runs about 95% of your daily behavior, just… started running the program on its own. Without asking you. Without consulting the part of you that set an intention this morning to do things differently.

This is why it feels like something takes over. Because something genuinely does.

You’re Not Addicted to Food (Okay, Let Me Explain)

I know this might sound counterintuitive, but stay with me.

What you’re actually addicted to isn’t the food itself. It’s the state change that the food produces. It’s the relief. The calm. The pleasure. That little window of distraction from whatever was weighing on you.

And here’s something I look at with almost every client I work with: if food is the only place in your life where you’re getting real dopamine, genuine pleasure, or a moment of just… being okay, of COURSE it’s going to take up enormous space. Of course you’re going to keep coming back to it. That makes complete sense. It’s not a weakness. It’s a gap.

I’ve worked with women who, when we started digging underneath the food stuff, realized they had slowly stopped doing almost everything they used to love. The hobbies, the friendships, the things that made their life feel full. All of that had quietly disappeared, crowded out by the mental energy of managing food and body anxiety.

And when your life gets smaller, food fills more of it. And the more food fills it, the more you need it. And the more you need it, the more of a hold it seems to have. It’s this tight little loop that feeds itself. (No pun intended.)

Food Is Not the Problem. Food Is the Solution.

This is the reframe that I think changes everything, and it’s also the one that’s hardest to sit with at first.

Food isn’t the problem. Food is the solution your nervous system came up with for a problem it didn’t know how to solve any other way.

Which means: all the rules, all the restrictions, all the “I just need more discipline” energy? That’s working on the wrong level. You’re treating the solution like it’s the source. And that’s why it keeps not working. Not because you’re failing. Because you’re looking in the wrong place.

The real work is underneath. It’s asking: what is food actually doing for me? What is it helping me avoid feeling? What would have to be different in my life for food to stop being so necessary?

I know. Bigger question. But the right one.

What I Actually See When Clients Do This Work

Something kind of amazing happens when women inside Food Freedom Academy start doing this deeper work. Their food behaviors change, but we haven’t really touched the food. We worked on what was underneath it. Emotional capacity expands. Life gets bigger. The gap that food was filling starts to close from other directions.

And food just… loses its charge. It doesn’t disappear from their lives. It goes back to being food. Something to enjoy, to nourish yourself with, to share with the people you love. Not the thing, their nervous system is white-knuckling toward every single evening.

I actually went through something similar myself not long ago, just with social media instead of food. I realized I was using it the same way: open my phone, scroll, feel a tiny hit of something, put the phone down, repeat. I was using it to change my internal state. So I deleted it off my phone. The first few days were genuinely uncomfortable, not gonna lie. But then the compulsion just… faded. And my relationship with it completely changed. Now if I go on it, it feels light and intentional. Not like a craving I have to feed.

That’s what happens when something gets released from its role as emotional regulator. It just becomes what it was always supposed to be.

Two Questions to Start With

These won’t fix everything overnight (and I’d be lying to you if I said they would). But they’ll start showing you what’s underneath. And awareness is always the first step.

Question 1: What emotional state am I actually chasing when I eat? Relief? Calm? Comfort? Numbness? Distraction? Pleasure? Something else entirely? And, where else in my life am I NOT getting that?

Because if food is the only place that emotional need is being met, of course it’s going to feel enormous.

Question 2: If food wasn’t an option right now, what would I do with what I’m feeling?

Not as a way to find a substitute behavior. Just as a way to start building a real relationship with your emotional experience, instead of bypassing it every time it shows up.

I really encourage you to write these down. Journal on them. Let them sit.
