You already know you’re doing it. You can feel it happening. And you still can’t stop. That gap, between knowing and being able to actually do something different, is not a willpower problem. It’s a nervous system problem. And that’s exactly what this episode is about.

This one comes from a real question from a member inside Food Freedom Academy, and I guarantee you’re going to hear yourself in it.

What’s Actually Happening When You Reach for Food

When you start feeling overwhelmed, like you’re failing, like there’s too much and not enough of you to handle it, your nervous system kicks into fight or flight. That’s not a metaphor. That’s a biological event.

And here’s what fight or flight actually does: it takes the part of your brain responsible for decision-making, impulse control, and long-term thinking completely offline. That’s why you can knowwww you’re stress eating and still do it anyway. Logic doesn’t work when your nervous system is in survival mode. The part of your brain that would hear the logic isn’t available.

So now you’re activated, overwhelmed, and there’s a part of you that learned a long time ago that food makes the feeling go away. Or at least makes it manageable. And that part doesn’t care about long-term consequences. It just doesn’t want you to have to sit in this pain for one more second.

That part isn’t bad. It’s not broken. It’s doing exactly what it was trained to do.

The Part That Eats Has a Job

This is the thing nobody tells you, and it changes everything when you finally get it:

The part of you that reaches for food when you’re overwhelmed thinks it’s helping you.

It really does. It found a strategy that works, even temporarily, even imperfectly, and it’s been using it ever since. If you ask yourself when emotional eating started for you, it wasn’t last year. It was probably years or even decades ago. Which means that part of you might be 13 years old, running a strategy it learned when it had zero other options and zero capacity to sit with discomfort.

It doesn’t know you’ve grown. It doesn’t know you have more capacity now. It’s frozen in the moment it learned the pattern, just trying to protect you the only way it knows how.

You can’t fight that part into submission. Shame doesn’t work on it. Restriction doesn’t work on it. The only thing that actually works is getting curious about it.

What to Do Instead (Before You Reach for Food)

Here’s the practice. And notice: we are not saying don’t eat. We are not taking that option off the table. What we’re doing is adding a step before it.

Step one: notice the activation.

You’re overwhelmed. You feel the pull toward food. Instead of going straight there, you pause and name what’s happening. I’m in fight or flight right now. My nervous system is activated. That’s it. No fixing, no solving, just naming.

Step two: use a regulating resource.

Do something to tend to your nervous system before you do anything else. Even for five minutes. Some options:

→ Box breathing: breathe in for four counts, hold for four, out for four, hold for four. This directly targets your vagus nerve, which regulates your nervous system. It’s not just calming, it’s physiologically resetting.

→ Go for a walk. Nature is regulating. Bilateral movement (left, right, left, right) is regulating. Engaging your senses tells your nervous system there’s no immediate threat.

→ Shake your body. When you’re in fight or flight, energy wants to move out. Let it.

→ Journal your overwhelm. Write down everything that feels like too much and roughly how long each thing will actually take. Overwhelm thrives on vagueness. Specificity usually reveals it’s more manageable than it felt.

Step three: bring in curiosity and compassion.

Once you’ve regulated even a little, you have more access to these two qualities. And you need both of them to do what comes next.

Think about how you’d respond if your kid came home from school crying. You wouldn’t shame them. You wouldn’t tell them to just stop feeling that way. You’d get down on their level, look them in the eye, and ask what happened. You already know how to do this. You just haven’t been applying it to yourself.

That’s the energy you bring to the part of you that wants to eat. Not “you’re not allowed to do this.” Not frustration. Just: what are you trying to protect me from right now? What do you need?

Step four: be with the feeling. Even for one minute.

After you’ve regulated and gotten curious, see if you can just sit with the overwhelm. Not fix it. Not solve it. Just be present with it.

If one minute is all you can manage, that’s one minute more than zero. That’s you building capacity. And then, after that minute, you give yourself full permission to eat if you still want to.

Sometimes you will. Sometimes you’ll realize the urge has shifted. Either way, you’ve practiced something.

Why This Is Different From “Just Go for a Walk”

You’ve probably been told to breathe or go for a walk before. And you’ve probably thought: what is that going to do?

Here’s what it’s actually doing. When you’re in fight or flight, there’s overactive energy in your body trying to fight a threat. Movement and breathwork discharge that energy. When you’re in shutdown, the opposite is true: there’s not enough energy, and gentle activation (a short walk, calling a friend, anything that brings stimulation) is what helps.

The regulation tool isn’t arbitrary. It’s matching what your nervous system actually needs in that specific state. That’s why understanding which state you’re in matters so much.

This Is How You Build Capacity

The goal here isn’t to never emotionally eat again starting today. That’s not how this works, and pretending otherwise sets you up to feel like you’re failing every time it happens.

The goal is to build your capacity to be with hard emotions so that food doesn’t have to do that job alone anymore. One minute at a time. One regulated moment at a time. One curious, compassionate conversation with that part of you at a time.

Over time, that part starts to trust that you can handle what it’s been protecting you from. And when it trusts you, it doesn’t have to work so hard.

That’s when things actually start to shift.

In This Episode

→ Why knowing you’re emotionally eating and still not being able to stop isn’t a willpower problem

→ What fight or flight actually does to your brain’s decision-making capacity

→ Why the part of you that reaches for food when you’re overwhelmed genuinely thinks it’s helping

→ Why your overeating part is probably much younger than you, and why it hasn’t gotten the update that things are different now

→ The four-step practice to do before you reach for food, without taking food off the table

→ Box breathing, walking, shaking, and journaling: why each one works and when to use which

→ Why understanding your nervous system state matters more than the specific tool you use

→ What it actually means to build capacity to sit with hard emotions, and why that’s the real goal
