215. 30 Lessons I Learned Before 30 (I turn 30 Today!)
Today is my 30th birthday. And I almost didn’t record this episode because things have been a lot lately. I took a month off the podcast, which hasn’t happened since I started it three and a half years ago, and I’ll share more about why in a future episode when the lessons have finished cooking and I can actually articulate them clearly.
But today felt like the right day to come back. Because I turned 30, and I have things to say about it.
My 20s were a lot. Living in Italy, living in France, the pandemic, university, starting a business, moving from one friend group to another, falling in love with Luke. So much growing. So much failing. So much figuring things out the hard way. I am SO proud of my 20s, and I am even more excited for what’s coming.
I do not believe your 20s are the best years of your life. I believe life keeps getting better. And these 30 lessons are part of why.
The 30 Lessons
- You can’t think your way into healing.
Reading every book, listening to every podcast, having full intellectual awareness of your patterns — none of it is enough to change them. Because the patterns don’t live in your mind. They live in your nervous system. And healing requires safety, not more information.
- Losing friendships is not a failure.
When your number one value is growth, you will outgrow some people. It’s not a judgment on them. It’s just that you’re operating at different frequencies. Moving on from a friendship that no longer fits is not something to be ashamed of. It’s something to be proud of.
- It’s okay to be misunderstood.
Some people are committed to misunderstanding you. You will not convince them. And honestly? That’s not your job. As long as your intention is pure and you’re showing up in integrity, you can let that go.
- Eating is a non-negotiable.
If I’m hungry and food is available, I eat. Full stop. Not in two hours. Not after one more task. Now. Because I know what I’m like when I’m not fed, and it’s not pretty, and it’s not respectful to my body.
- Your deepest desires will often be the hardest to achieve, and will require the most healing from you.
Your soul didn’t give you that desire by accident. The thing that feels the most out of reach is usually pointing directly to where the most growth is available. Your food and body stuff isn’t random. It’s your Mount Everest. And that means there’s a whole lot of healing waiting on the other side of it.
- Life is like a video game. There is no finish line.
You don’t get to a point where the healing is done and you can stop. Each level brings better relationships, more fulfillment, more peace. And also: a whole new set of challenges and lessons. When you feel stuck in a level, the question isn’t “what’s wrong with me.” It’s “what lesson am I not learning here?”
- The universe will first throw you a pebble, then a rock, then a boulder.
Something always signals that a change needs to happen before it becomes a crisis. The pebble is quiet. Most people wait for the boulder. I’m learning to notice the pebble and do something about it then.
- Your biggest breakdowns will lead to your biggest breakthroughs. If you let them.
When you’re tearing down a building, the site looks like rubble. That doesn’t mean nothing is being built. Sometimes things have to get stripped away to make space for something better. You get to choose how you look at it.
- Stop buying cheap things you don’t need.
Living out of a backpack in Italy taught me how little I actually need. Buying things to fill a hole doesn’t fill the hole. It just costs money and clutters your space.
- Care about the environment.
This is our home. That’s it. That’s the lesson.
- In life, you’ll either get the result you wanted or the lesson you needed.
Every failed diet, every cycle you couldn’t break, every time something didn’t go the way you hoped. There was always a lesson in there. The question is whether you look for it or just make it mean something about your worth.
- Perfectionism is not a personality trait. It’s a protection mechanism.
I used to wear it as a badge of honor. “I’m just a perfectionist.” But perfectionism is a part of you that learned: if I do everything perfectly, I’m safe from failure, rejection, not being enough. It’s not who you are. It’s a strategy. And strategies can be changed.
- Everyone should meditate.
The same way we exercise our bodies, we should exercise our minds. It’s one of the most important habits I’ve built in my entire life. That’s all.
- The most important thing you can learn about is how your nervous system works.
You can know everything about your problem and still repeat it anyway. That’s a nervous system problem, not an awareness problem. Once you understand that, everything changes.
- Stop trying to be someone you’re not.
When you’re fully yourself, the wrong people filter themselves out. The right people find you. I spent years morphing myself to fit into groups that weren’t my groups. What I got was belonging that didn’t feel like belonging at all.
- Stop drinking alcohol.
I did a full episode on this one so I won’t repeat it here. But the hangover, the hangxiety, the next-day fog — I have not felt any of that in years. I genuinely can’t imagine going back.
- One of the greatest skills you can have is asking really good questions.
Stop trying to be the most interesting person in the room. Be the most interested. Ask the kind of questions that make people feel truly heard. Small talk makes my insides shrivel. Real conversation is the point.
- Your external reality is a reflection of your internal state.
Your relationships, your finances, what you’ve built — all of it reflects what you believe you’re capable of and worthy of. If you want something different on the outside, you have to look at what’s running on the inside first. You don’t change the whiteboard. You change what’s in the projector.
- Avoidance is one of the most expensive things you can do.
Not just in money. In time. Something you could have addressed 10 years ago now has 10 extra years of momentum. I’m not scared of wasting money. I can make more money. I’m scared of wasting time. That’s what makes me deal with hard things sooner rather than later.
- Read books.
So much of what I know, how I think, the conversations I can have, has come from reading. Just: read books.
- Stop watching the news.
It is a constant stream of fear and negativity, designed to hold your attention by keeping you activated. What you consume daily impacts your biology, your mood, how you see the world. I stopped years ago and I will never go back. You can stay informed other ways.
- You can’t help others if you don’t help yourself first.
It’s not selfish to prioritize yourself. You cannot pour from an empty bucket. You can’t give what you don’t have.
- Just because everyone else is living a certain way doesn’t mean it’s right for you.
Hustle culture is normalized. Overscheduling is normalized. Living in survival mode is normalized. Normalized doesn’t mean healthy. I live at a rhythm that works for me, not the one everyone else seems to think is proof you’re trying hard enough.
- Prioritize your sleep.
My mood, my choices, my relationships, my body, everything is worse when I’m not sleeping. The night I went to bed at 1am, Luke and I bickered the whole next day and I felt terrible in my body. Just: sleep.
- Social media and your phone can destroy you if you let them.
I have blockers in place. I’m intentional about what I consume and who I follow. The comparison, the scrolling, the way I feel after too much time on it versus not. Night and day. You have more control over your algorithm than you think.
- Treat people the way you want to be treated.
Not complicated. Just: be the kind of friend, partner, and person you want in your life. Start first. Don’t wait for reciprocation before you begin.
- Consistency beats perfection every single time.
I am at the healthiest I have ever been. And I am far from perfect. There are days I work out at 30%. Days I don’t work out at all. The five-minute meditation counts. Showing up with whatever you have on a given day is the whole practice.
- Focus on how you feel, not how you look.
This was one of the biggest shifts in healing my relationship with food and my body. When I started making choices based on how they made me feel, I ended up taking better care of myself. When you obsess over how you look, you end up in behaviors that are actually harmful. Focus moves inward. Everything else follows.
- Being scared is not a reason to not do something.
Your nervous system will always find the unfamiliar threatening. That’s its job. But if you only do the things that feel safe, you will live a very small life. The biggest growth has always been on the other side of fear. Chase the discomfort.
- You are your greatest investment.
I spent more money in my 20s on coaches, healing, and personal growth than on most other things. A lot of people my age spent that money on trips, clothes, weddings. There’s nothing wrong with that. But I made a bet on myself, and that bet has been paying back tenfold and will keep paying back for decades.
What I’d Tell 20-Year-Old Me
The 20s are not the best years of your life. They’re the years where you figure out who you are, what you believe, and how you want to live. They’re confusing and beautiful and they set you up for everything that comes after.
I am so proud of the decisions I made in my 20s. And I am so excited for what’s next.
