You’ve heard it a million times. “Just listen to your body.” And you’ve tried. You really have. But when you actually stop and tune in, it’s like… nothing. Silence. Static. Or something DOES come through and it feels so overwhelming that you immediately want to back away from it.

And then you wonder what is wrong with you, because this is supposed to be the most natural thing in the world, right? Babies do it. Animals do it. Why does it feel so impossible for YOU?

Here’s the thing. Nothing is wrong with you. But there are some very specific reasons why this feels so hard, and once you understand them, I promise it will make SO much more sense.

This is Episode 4 of the Nervous System Series. If you haven’t listened to Episodes 1, 2, and 3 yet, go back and start there. They all build on each other, and this one especially needs that foundation.

First, a Quick Thing About Intuitive Eating

I want to be clear: I am not anti intuitive eating. At all. I consider myself an intuitive eater. Every single client who graduates Food Freedom Academy is an intuitive eater. The destination is real and it’s possible for you.

BUT. The framework has a massive, massive missing piece. And that piece is the nervous system.

Principle 2 of intuitive eating is all about honoring your hunger. Which makes total sense in theory. Except… for the woman who has spent years dysregulated, anxious around food, terrified of her body changing, micromanaging every bite? Her body does not feel safe. It is not primed for connection or communication. You cannot just decide to start listening to a body that is braced for threat.

That’s the missing piece. And it’s a big one.

Reason One: Survival Mode Turns the Signals Off

When your nervous system thinks you’re in danger, it shuts down everything that isn’t essential for surviving the immediate threat. Digestion. Rest. And yes, your ability to receive internal signals from your body, hunger, fullness, what you actually want, all of that gets turned WAY down.

If you’re being chased by a lion, you are not stopping to ask yourself if you want a snack. Your body knows that. So it redirects every resource toward surviving the lion.

The problem is, your nervous system cannot tell the difference between a lion and the email from your boss that you’ve been ruminating over for three hours. Or the thing your kid is going through at school that keeps looping in your head on repeat.

Animals don’t do this, by the way. A gazelle gets chased, escapes, and just… goes back to grazing. She’s not sitting there replaying the lion incident all afternoon. But we do. We relive the experience in our minds over and over, which keeps our body stuck in the same survival response long after the actual moment is gone.

So you’re trying to listen to your body while spending most of your day in some version of fight or flight. And you wonder why you can’t hear anything. You’re not doing it wrong. You’re listening to a radio that has been deliberately turned down.

Reason Two: Your Body Learned to Stop Calling

Okay, this one is SO important and I don’t think people talk about it enough.

Every time you ignored your hunger, you sent your brain a message. Skipping breakfast and calling it discipline. Feeling hungry and drinking black coffee instead. Chewing gum to push it down. Eating according to the plan regardless of what your body was actually asking for.

Your brain got the message. She doesn’t respond when I call. So eventually, it stops calling as loudly.

Think about it like this. You have a friend who calls you over and over and over again, and you never pick up. Not once. Eventually she’s going to stop calling. Not because she stopped existing, not because she doesn’t have things to say. She just learned the call isn’t going to be answered.

That is what years of overriding your body’s signals does. It doesn’t erase them. But it turns the volume so far down that when you finally try to listen, it feels like you’re listening into a void. And that void is not proof that something is broken. It’s proof that your body is very, very smart.

Reason Three: Going Inward Doesn’t Feel Safe

This is the one I really want you to sit with.

For a LOT of women, the problem isn’t just that the signals are quiet. It’s that tuning in feels actively scary. Like something in you wants to immediately back away from it.

Because here’s the thing about interoception, which is your ability to sense what’s happening inside your body. It is not just about hunger and fullness. It’s about your emotions. Your fatigue. Everything your body has been holding.

And if you’ve spent years pushing your emotions down, using food or restriction or scrolling or just staying BUSY to avoid going inward, then your body has accumulated a lot of unprocessed feeling. Anxiety. Shame. Guilt. Regret. That formless dread that has nothing to do with food but everything to do with what you haven’t let yourself feel yet.

So when you try to tune in? You’re not just listening for hunger cues. You’re potentially walking into all of that.

And your nervous system knows it. So it keeps you in your head instead. Living from the neck up. Overanalyzing, logic-ing, reflecting on the problems without actually FEELING them. I did this for yearsss. I was SO self-aware. I could tell you everythinggg about my patterns and why I had them. But I was analyzing them from a safe distance, not actually going into the depth of what they were about. Because going there did not feel like something I could survive.

So as long as your nervous system believes you cannot handle what’s in there, it will keep you away from it. And the food stuff, the restriction, the obsessing over your body, those stay in place. Not because you lack discipline. Because your body is doing its actual job.

Why Going Too Big Too Fast Always Backfires

There’s a comfort zone. A panic zone. And a growth zone that lives in between.

The growth zone is where healing happens. It’s uncomfortable enough to create change, but not so overwhelming that your nervous system retreats. That’s the sweet spot.

But what usually happens when someone decides they are DONE letting food control their life? They try to go all the way across in one jump. Stop all the rules immediately. Eat everything. Feel every feeling right now. And their nervous system takes one look at that and sprints straight back to the comfort zone.

Because here’s what your nervous system knows: even if the comfort zone is miserable, even if food is consuming your entire life inside of it, at least it’s familiar. At least it doesn’t feel like panic. And familiar-but-miserable will always beat terrifying-but-growth, until your nervous system has enough evidence that the growth zone is survivable.

That evidence comes from gradual exposure. Small steps. Doing it in an environment where you feel safe and supported. Each time you take a step and it doesn’t destroy you, that’s evidence. And evidence is what actually changes what your nervous system believes is possible.

What Has to Come First

Intuitive eating is the destination. I believe that with everything in me. But you cannot just start there.

What comes first is showing your nervous system that it’s safe. Building your capacity to be in your body without being overwhelmed by it. Learning to sit with discomfort in small, manageable doses so your brain can accumulate the evidence it needs.

When you’re not living by the hormones of stress all day long, something really beautiful starts to happen. Hunger starts to feel different from anxiety. Fullness becomes easier to notice. The signals get clearer. Not because anything changed about your body, but because the static finally cleared enough to hear them.

This is not something you can just read about and have click into place. It’s a process. And it works best when you’re doing it in an environment where someone can tell you: what you’re experiencing right now is normal. You’re not doing it wrong. This discomfort means you’re on the right path.

Because the beginning of this can feel harder before it feels easier. And if you’re in it alone, your brain will convince you it’s not working. It will tell you to go back.
