206. The 4 Nervous System States Running Your Relationship With Food (The Nervous System Series, Ep. 2)
You have four nervous system states. And every single one of them is having an impact on what you eat, how much, and whether you can hear your body at all.
Not your willpower. Not your “good” days versus your “bad” days. The state you’re in.
This is Episode 2 of the Nervous System Series. If you haven’t listened to episode one yet, go back and start there. This one builds right on top of it.
70% of People Are Walking Around Dysregulated. And Calling It Normal.
In the Western world, people spend about 70% of their time in a survival state. Fight or flight. Shutdown. Fawn. Most of them have no idea.
Not because something is wrong with them. Because it’s all they’ve ever known. So it just becomes “this is who I am.”
I want you to hear this clearly: it’s not who you are. It’s a state. And states change.
Here’s the thing though. Once you can actually name the state you’re in, everything gets less confusing. You stop spiraling into “what is wrong with me” and you start asking a much better question: what does this state actually need right now?
State One: Safe and Social. Your Home Base.
This is your regulated state. And I don’t mean regulated like “calm all the time and never bothered by anything,” I mean: safe, grounded, present.
Your nervous system isn’t scanning the room for danger. Which means it finally has bandwidth for other things. Hope. Curiosity. Actual connection with people, the kind where you can be a little vulnerable and it doesn’t feel terrifying.
For me, it’s being outside in nature. My brain isn’t going a million miles an hour. I’m just… there.
And here’s why this matters so much for food: when your body isn’t on high alert, it can actually send you clear signals. Hunger. Fullness. What you genuinely want versus what you’re reaching for. Intuitive eating becomes possible here. Not because you tried harder. Because the static finally cleared.
This state is also the only one where you can think long-term. Five years from now. Ten. When you’re in survival, you’re thinking one hour ahead, maybe one meal ahead. That’s it. That’s why building the habits you actually want feels impossible when you’re dysregulated. There’s no room for the long view when your whole system is just trying to get through today.
And no, the goal is not to live here 24/7. If you make that the goal you will feel like a failure constantly, because it’s not realistic. The goal is just: come back here faster. Come back here more.
State Two: Fight or Flight
This is the one everyone already half-recognizes. Your nervous system senses a threat, real or not, and gets your whole body ready to act.
Physically: heart racing, breath shallow and fast, shoulders up by your ears, that knot in your stomach that won’t go away. Digestion gets weird. Sleep gets wrecked. You CANNOT think clearly, no matter how badly you want to.
With food, this shows up a few different ways. Sometimes it’s emotional eating, stress eating, completely tuning out your body’s signals. Sometimes it’s the opposite: gripping tighter, restricting harder, because controlling food is the one thing that feels controllable when everything else doesn’t.
You might also notice you’re suddenly craving sugar, carbs, caffeine, allllll the quick energy sources. That is not a discipline problem. Your body thinks it needs fuel to fight something. The craving is actually smart. It just doesn’t serve you in a Tuesday-afternoon-at-your-desk kind of threat.
And this is exactly why intuitive eating advice falls apart for so many people. You cannot just decide to listen to your body while you’re in fight or flight. The signals are there. They’re just garbled. Static on the line. The nervous system has to come first.
State Three: Shutdown (Freeze)
If fight or flight is too much gas, shutdown is the engine cutting out completely. Your nervous system decided the threat was too big to fight or outrun. So it just… disconnects.
Physically: heart rate slows down, breath gets shallow in a different way, everything feels heavy, like moving through molasses. Sleep gets disrupted here too, but it looks like oversleeping, or just not being able to drag yourself out of bed.
Emotionally: numb. Flat. Hopeless. Stuck. A lot of shame sitting underneath all of it.
With food, this often looks like eating just to feel SOMETHING. Anything. Because there’s this flatness, this lack of aliveness, and food is one of the fastest ways to interrupt it. There’s also a real disconnection from your body’s needs here. Some people can’t even bring themselves to shower. Not because they’re lazy. Because the system genuinely does not have the energy to spare.
And I need you to hear this part: pushing harder here does not work. Shaming yourself does not work. Your body is not being lazy, it’s out of capacity. Telling it to try harder just adds more weight onto a system that’s already running on empty.
State Four: Fawn (People-Pleasing)
This one’s a blend. Weirdly, your body has overactive energy AND underactive energy happening at the same time. Heightened focus on pleasing everyone around you, layered on top of that same shutdown-ish exhaustion underneath.
Emotionally it runs on guilt, shame, fear of being rejected, resentment you can’t quite name. You feel like you’re performing a version of yourself. And on some level you know it. “This isn’t really me, this is the me I think keeps me safe.”
Makes sense when you zoom out though. For most of human history, being part of the group WAS survival. Getting cast out was an actual threat to your life.
With food, fawn can look like over-controlling your intake, obsessing over your body to earn approval. It can also look like saying yes to food you don’t even want, because saying no feels too risky in the moment… and then going home and eating in private to make up for the boundary you didn’t set out loud.
If you’ve ever eaten one way in front of people and a completely different way alone, this is usually why.
This Is Not Who You Are
If you just read through all four and thought “oh no, that’s me, that’s me, that’s also me”… I need you to hear this part more than anything else in this episode.
These are altered states. Not your personality.
Who you ACTUALLY are is the version of you in safe and social. Calm. Clear. Connected. You might have spent so little time there that you genuinely forgot what it feels like. That’s not a character flaw. That’s just where your nervous system has been living.
And the goal here is not to never get dysregulated again. That’s not how nervous systems work, and chasing permanent calm will just hand you a brand new way to feel like you’re failing. The actual goal is building two things: more capacity to handle stress without tipping into a survival state, and more skill at finding your way back when you do tip into one.
This work does not erase the states. I still go into fight or flight all the time, it’s basically my home team. But because I’ve done the foundational work, it no longer hijacks my eating or my ability to hear my own body. That’s the real win. Not perfection. A nervous system that can move through the hard moment and actually come back.
