205. It's Not a Food Problem. It's a Nervous System Problem (The Nervous System Series, Ep. 1)
The reason you keep struggling with food has nothing to do with food. It’s your nervous system — and until you understand that, nothing else is going to stick. And that’s what this episode is about.
This is Episode 1 of the Nervous System Series.
What Your Nervous System Actually Does
Think of your nervous system as your body’s alarm system and communication network in one. It’s a giant web of signals running from your brain through your entire body, and it has one job: keep you safe.
Every second of every day, it’s scanning. Am I safe right now? Or is there a threat?
When it senses danger, it hits the alarm. When it senses safety, it lets you relax. That’s the whole job.
The scanning process has a name: neuroception. And the key thing about neuroception is that it happens below your conscious awareness. You’re not deciding it. You’re not thinking it. Your nervous system is reading the room — people, places, sounds, sensations, memories — and making a call before your brain even has a chance to weigh in.
What “Chronically Dysregulated” Actually Means
Imagine your smoke detector goes off every time you make toast. Not just for actual fires — for steam from the shower, for someone raising their voice two rooms over, for the smell of something burning three days ago.
A chronically dysregulated nervous system is that smoke detector stuck in alarm mode. It never fully resets. It’s always a little on edge, even when nothing dangerous is actually happening.
This doesn’t mean you’re broken. It usually means your nervous system learned to stay on high alert because, at some point in your life, that kept you safe. It was smart. It was adaptive. It just hasn’t gotten the memo that things are different now.
What Dysregulation Actually Looks Like
It doesn’t always look like obvious stress. It shows up in a few different ways:
Too activated — alarm bells on full blast:
→ Anxiety, racing thoughts, can’t slow down
→ Irritability, snapping at people you love
→ Wired but exhausted
→ Always waiting for the next thing to go wrong
Too shut down — system powered off:
→ Numbness, flatness, disconnected from your own feelings
→ Hard to make decisions or feel motivated
→ Going through the motions but not really present
→ Feeling like nothing matters
Bouncing between both:
→ One minute overwhelmed, next minute totally checked out
→ Big emotional swings that are hard to explain
→ Reactions that don’t seem to match the situation
Most people don’t recognize this as a nervous system state. They just think: this is how I am.
How This Shows Up in Your Relationship With Food
When your nervous system is in alarm mode, your brain is running one program: survive. And a survival brain is not interested in balance, intuition, or eating mindfully. It wants relief. Fast.
How It Shows Up Around Food
- Eating past fullness even when you wanted to stop — not weakness, your body reaching for relief
- Using food to soothe stress, anxiety, boredom, or emotional pain
- Feeling magnetically pulled toward certain foods even when you’re not hungry
- All-or-nothing eating patterns — restriction swings into overconsumption, repeat
- Constant food thoughts and mental preoccupation that won’t quiet down
- Feeling out of control around food and not understanding why
How It Shows Up In Your Body
- Disconnection from hunger and fullness cues — hard to hear signals you’re not tuned into
- Not feeling present in your body during or after eating
- Chronic tension, gut issues, fatigue — the body holding stress it never got to release
- Feeling like your body is the enemy rather than something working for you
How It Shows Up In Your Mind
- Shame and self-blame after eating — “why can’t I just be normal”
- Black and white thinking around food, health, and your body
- A deep sense that something is wrong with you specifically
- Hypervigilance around food — always tracking, analyzing, second-guessing
What a Healthy Nervous System Actually Is
Here’s something worth sitting with: a healthy nervous system is not one that’s regulated all the time.
It’s one that’s resilient and flexible. It can handle the ups and downs of a real life without getting overwhelmed or stuck in survival mode. It can move between states as the situation calls for it — and find its way back to regulation on its own.
That’s the goal. Not perfect calm. Not never getting activated. The ability to move through the hard moments and come back.
That’s what’s possible for you. And it starts with understanding what’s actually happening in your body when food feels out of control.
