197. Case Study: She Struggled for 40 Years and Thought “This Is Just My Life” — Here's What Actually Set Her Free
Stephanie had been navigating a complicated relationship with food and her body since she was 15.
She was a teacher. A marathoner. Someone who ran Ironmans and got called disciplined and in control her whole life. For a long time, she convinced herself that was mostly true. She was eating. She was functioning. She had a full-time job and a race schedule and, from the outside, a life that looked pretty put-together.
Inside, she hadn’t relaxed around food or her body in DECADES.
In this episode, she sits down with me to talk about what four decades of disordered eating and compulsive exercise actually looked like — how it changed shape over the years, what the pandemic uncovered, what finally pushed her to do something different, and what she found on the other side.
In This Episode, You’ll Hear
- Why Stephanie considered herself “mostly healed” for 20 years — even while never missing a workout, sick or injured, and living by a rigid list of foods that were allowed and not allowed
- The moment her mom’s cancer diagnosis cracked things open, and the specific memory she carries as one of her biggest regrets
- What she actually thought the problem was when she was deep in the over-exercising — and what she now understands was really driving it
- How her entire sense of worth got wrapped up in being an athlete, and what happened when she started to loosen that grip
- What the messy middle of healing genuinely feels like: giving up the habits that kept you safe before you have anything to replace them with
- Why affirmations didn’t work — and what her nervous system actually needed instead to start believing something different
- The pants that didn’t fit before her dad’s birthday dinner, and why that small moment became one of the biggest signs of how much had changed
- What she’d say to the woman who’s been struggling for so long she’s quietly accepted this is just how it is for her
- Why she almost didn’t sign up — and what she was most afraid of going in
About Stephanie
Stephanie Brenneman is a teacher, athlete, and Food Freedom Academy graduate. She spent over 40 years in a complicated relationship with food, her body, and exercise — and she’s sharing her story here for the woman who’s starting to wonder if it ever actually gets better.
A Note Before You Listen
There’s a version of this story I hear all the time inside Food Freedom Academy. Smart, high-functioning woman. Praised for her control. Completely exhausted by something nobody around her can see.
That’s Stephanie.
And the part of her story that I keep coming back to is this: she didn’t think healing was available to her. Not really. She’d been in this long enough that she’d kind of made peace with the idea that this was just… her life.
She tells me in this episode that she genuinely thought she was going to die with this.
She didn’t. And if you’re sitting somewhere close to that thought right now, I really want you to hear this one.
